Summer Palette Cleanse: ZuCot Gallery Opening Reception featuring Artist Jamaal Barber, Sean Haynes, Julio Mejia, Aaron F. Henderson, and Jerry Lynn
“This summer I will fall back in love with myself, the world, and life again through art.”
This affirmation stood out to me on the walls of the ZuCot Gallery and set the tone for the way I embraced the exhibition.
The Summer Palette Cleanse Opening Reception at the ZuCot Gallery featuring artists Jamaal Barber, Sean Haynes, Julio Mejia, Aaron F. Henderson, and Jerry Lynn was one full of color and texture.
I was immediately drawn to the Smiling through Tears by Julio Mejia. Funny that I resonated with it’s abstractedness before being aware of the title. I could stare at its many layers endlessly. The bright and delicate underlying colors carry the warm center so well, pulling me in. A very magnetic feeling… I knew this energy very well.
Later, I had the pleasure of meeting artist Jamaal Barber. I appreciated his work most for the genuine narrative, which was one I could relate to. Barber’s bold Afrolicious linoleum cuts celebrated natural hair in it’s most vulnerable growing stages, after a “big chop” takes place where one cuts away damaged and chemically altered ends to start over again. It was refreshing to witness a man celebrate these transitions with us… back to our roots, our heritage… redefining what beauty means to us.
Barber also has a background in graphic design, which I totally picked up on! (He’s a pretty cool and kind person by the way.) I definitely walked away feeling inspired and will hold that affirmation with me as I continue creating this summer. “This summer I will fall back in love with myself, the world, and life again through art.” I look forward to returning to ZuCot Gallery to soak up the Dear Summer exhibit.
